Pre-election protests against Taiwanese Government

Two million people took to the streets in support of Taiwanese Opposition leader Lien Chan, the Nationalist contender, a he attempts to win Presidency from Chen Shui-bian in the coming elections. Reuters has reprted on the coming election, to be held this time next week, the third free elections for the Taiwanese people.

The ABC cites only 'hundreds of thousands as rallying for the pro-China Lien. The issue of China is the biggest difference between the two candidates, with Mr Chen much more ferocious about Taiwan's independence.

However, even better than the Taipei Times in its reportage is the BBC, which along with its main article on the rally, it has extensive background, profiles and Q&A's relating to Taiwan, similar to what we saw with Haiti earlier in the week.

Taiwan's fluctuating relations with China is one of the world's hot spots - China has made it clear in the past that it will stop at nothing to keep Taiwan as part of the 'One Nation'. Similarly, Taiwan is stubbornly clinging to hopes of independence. Added with the United States backing of Taiwan mixed with their trade development with China and the situtation could drastically deteriorate or stalemate - and the media is watching to find out
